  • Ukrainian refugees, Local Council housing, 16 March 2022

Philippa: I thank the honourable gentlemen for giving way. I mean, this is one of my concerns, in that just getting accommodation by people signing up to this website isn’t going to solve this. People will need all sorts of support. Both to integrate, but also these would be traumatized people.

So would we not be better that local councils would create these lists of people with accommodation? Cause the idea that that can be handled from here across the whole UK, it’s not going to work. It should be as localized as possible.

Peter Bone MP: The honourable lady raises a very interesting point and I have a lot of time for what she has to say and I think that’s something – there is merit in that, because I know that one of the problems with getting the Afghan refugees settled was it had to come through the Home Office and then come down to local authority. And that took a little bit extra time. But certainly North Northamptonshire Council has in place the ability to do this and to do this quickly.

So it may be something that the government wants to look at. I I’m certainly no fan of centralized systems based on a computer that’s liable to break down at any time. So I, I think that is certainly worth looking at.
